Root Canal Therapy Post-Treatment Instructions in Dallas

What Should I Expect After My Root Canal?

It is normal to experience some tenderness or discomfort for several days after root canal treatment. The tooth and surrounding tissues may be sensitive to chewing, brushing, or touching. This discomfort is usually related to the inflammation and infection that existed before treatment, as well as the healing process that follows.

Most patients notice gradual improvement within 3–5 days, although mild soreness may occasionally last for one to two weeks. As long as your symptoms continue to improve each day, healing is progressing normally.

Continue brushing and flossing the treated area gently as part of your regular oral hygiene routine.

Managing Discomfort

To help control discomfort and inflammation, follow our dentist's recommendations for pain medication.

Common over-the-counter options include:

Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®)

  • Helps reduce pain and inflammation
  • Follow the dosage instructions provided by our dentist or on the product label
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dose
  • Avoid use if you have been advised not to take NSAIDs

Acetaminophen (Tylenol®)

  • Helps relieve pain
  • Follow the dosage instructions on the product label
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dose

Some patients may benefit from alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen as directed by our dentist.

If your discomfort is not adequately controlled with recommended medications, please contact our office at (972) 241-4820.

Swelling or Increasing Pain

Mild tenderness is normal after treatment. However, please contact our office if you experience:

  • Facial swelling
  • Increasing pain after the first few days
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Fever
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing

In some cases, additional medication such as an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary.

If you are prescribed an antibiotic:

  • Take all medication exactly as directed.
  • Complete the full course unless instructed otherwise.
  • Contact our office if you experience severe diarrhea, rash, or other concerning side effects.

Taking a probiotic or eating yogurt may help reduce digestive side effects while taking antibiotics.

Temporary Filling Care

If your root canal treatment requires more than one visit, a temporary filling may be placed between appointments.

To protect the temporary restoration:

  • Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on the treated side.
  • Brush normally.
  • Floss carefully around the tooth.

If a small portion of the temporary filling wears down, this is usually not a problem. However, if the filling falls out completely or a significant portion is lost, please contact our office so we can evaluate and replace it if necessary.

Completing Your Treatment

If root canal therapy has been started, it is important to complete all recommended treatment appointments.

Many teeth require a permanent restoration, such as a crown, after root canal therapy. A crown helps:

  • Protect the tooth from fracture
  • Restore normal function
  • Prevent reinfection
  • Extend the life of the treated tooth

Delaying the final restoration may increase the risk of tooth fracture or treatment failure.
