Tooth Extraction Post-Treatment Instructions in Dallas

Proper Care After a Tooth Extraction

Proper care after a tooth extraction promotes healing, minimizes discomfort, and reduces the risk of complications. Please follow these instructions carefully.

Managing Bleeding

It is normal to experience slight bleeding or oozing for the first several hours after an extraction.

  • Keep firm pressure on the gauze placed over the extraction site by biting down for 30–60 minutes.
  • If bleeding continues, replace with fresh gauze and apply firm pressure for another 30 minutes.
  • Avoid frequently checking the area, as this may disrupt clot formation.
  • If gauze is unavailable, a clean, damp tea bag may be placed over the site and bitten down on for 30 minutes.
  • Do not use tissues or cotton balls, as they may stick to the extraction site.

Contact our office at 972-241-4820 if heavy bleeding continues despite these measures.

Oral Care

The blood clot that forms in the extraction site is essential for healing.

For the First 24 Hours

  • Do not rinse vigorously.
  • Do not spit excessively.
  • Do not use straws.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products.
  • Avoid touching the extraction site with your tongue or fingers.

After 24 Hours

  • Gently rinse with warm salt water 3–4 times daily, especially after meals.
  • Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
  • Continue brushing and flossing your other teeth normally, being careful around the extraction area.

Diet

Proper nutrition supports healing.

For the First Day

  • Begin with cool or lukewarm liquids.
  • Choose soft foods such as yogurt, pudding, applesauce, mashed potatoes, soup, eggs, oatmeal, smoothies (without a straw), and gelatin.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

For Several Days After Surgery

  • Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or chewy foods that may irritate the extraction site.
  • Gradually return to your normal diet as comfort allows.

Swelling and Discomfort

Some swelling, soreness, bruising, and jaw stiffness are normal after an extraction.

During the First 48 Hours

  • Apply an ice pack to the outside of the face for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off while awake.
  • Continue as tolerated during the first two days.

After 48 Hours

  • Switch to warm, moist compresses if swelling or jaw stiffness persists.

Take any prescribed medications as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also be recommended by your dentist.

What Is Normal During Healing?

You may experience:

  • Mild bleeding or oozing
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Tenderness around the extraction site
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • Mild ear discomfort or jaw soreness
  • A white or yellowish layer over the extraction site after several days

These are typically normal parts of the healing process and do not necessarily indicate infection.
